FOREWORD FOR THE COMMEMORATIVE ANTHOLOGY OF
AUSTRALIAN STUDIES IN CHINA

The strong and highly valued bilateral relationship between Australia and China has benefited both Australians and the Chinese people for many years. During the past decade, the various Australian Studies Centres across China have played an important role in enhancing this relationship by encouraging young Chinese students to learn more about Australia.

The Australian Studies Centre at Renmin University of China in Beijing plays an important and active role in Australian-Chinese cultural relations. Since its establishment in 1999, the Centre has hosted an annual Australian Culture Week that provides excellent opportunities for Chinese university students to obtain a deeper understanding of Australia. The ‘Australian Society and Culture’ course offered by the Centre has been particularly popular, fostering an interest in Australia in many young people.

‘Imagine Australia, the Year of Australian Culture in China’ is a series of cultural exchange projects running from June 2010 to June 2011 across China. It aims to enhance friendly relations, promote exchange and further mutual understanding between Australia and China.

These events showcase some of Australia’s finest talent in performing arts projects and visual arts exhibitions and the Centre has been actively participating in a number of activities, thereby further promoting a greater understanding of Australia among Chinese students.

I take great pleasure in congratulating the Australian Studies Centre of Renmin University on the publication of its ‘Commemorative Anthology of Australian Studies in China’. The anthology is an invaluable resource for all who have an interest in this important cultural and educational initiative as well as in the ties that exist between our people.

I would like to extend my particular thanks to the director of Renmin University’s Australian Studies Centre, Professor Zhang Yongxian and the staff and students of the Australian Studies Centre for their continuing efforts in promoting Australian culture in China. I am confident that through their efforts the relationship between Australia and China has been greatly enhanced at many different levels.

The Honourable Julia Gillard MP
Prime Minister of Australia
