Former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul shared his insights on Trump's tariff strategy, saying directly that it is not in America's national interest. McFaul joked Trump has loved tariffs for four decades so there is consistency underlying his tariff policy. "If the United States and China completely decouple, both will be worse up. Whereas, coupling helps to create stability, helps to create incentives to keep peaceful.”
Wu Xiaoqiu, RUC's dean of the National Finance and Development Institute, echoed McFaul's points. "The economic and trade relations are cornerstone for the U.S.-China relations. While, the domestic and foreign policies of Trump 2.0 are riddled with contradictions. First, the U.S. wants to achieve a trade surplus while also maintaining the dominance of the U.S. dollar, which is an unrealistic "have-it-both-ways" approach. Second, the U.S. push for de-globalization and its use of tariffs to suppress the development of other countries run counter to the general direction of human civilization. By repeatedly acting against the global trend, the U.S. risks losing its international credibility." Wu pointed out.
The dialogue was co-hosted by the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies and the School of Global Leadership, RUC and chaired by renowned scholar Wang Wen.
